OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Texas Longhorns softball team is heading back to the World Series final to defend its national title.
Texas had to do it the hard way with four straight wins while facing elimination — capped by back-to-back wins over Tennessee on Monday.
The Longhorns dropped their opening game of the College World Series to Tennessee last Thursday, 6-3.
They haven’t lost since with wins over Mississippi State (4-0), Nebraska (3-1) and then a sweep of Tennessee on Monday by scores of 5-2 and 4-0.
They finished it off with a sensational pitching performance by Teagan Kavan, who allowed only two hits in the shutout win.
Former Coahoma star Hannah Wells went 2-for-2 to help lead the Longhorns' offense, which had seven hits, including a home run by Katie Stewart.
Texas improved to 51-12 and will play the winner of Alabama and Texas Tech in the best-of-three championship series, which begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN.
It will be the third straight year Texas has played in the championship series, and the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Last year, Texas beat Texas Tech in Game 3 to win its first-ever national title in softball.
