OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Texas Longhorns softball team is one win away from defending its national title.
Texas jumped all over Texas Tech with five runs in the first inning of Game 1 of the championship series on Wednesday to roll to a 7-3 win.
Tech struck first on a sole home run by Mihyia Davis in the top of the first, but Texas stole the momentum with a huge bottom half of the inning.
The Red Raiders decided to start Kaitlyn Terry instead of star pitcher NiJaree Canady, and Terry didn’t make it out of the first inning.
Katie Stewart hit her 31st HR of the season for a 2-1 lead, and the Longhorns had runners on the corners with two outs when Terry was replaced by Canady.
It didn’t go much better for Canady, however, who gave up an RBI single to Kaiah Altmeyer and a two-run triple to Ashton Maloney.
Texas then tacked on another run in the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.
Tech’s Mia Williams hit a two-run HR in the fifth to make it 6-3, but the Red Raiders couldn’t get any closer. Texas added one more run in the sixth to help put the game away.
Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan held Tech’s offense to only three hits, while the Longhorns had 10 hits.
The teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday as Texas Tech looks to force a winner-take-all Game 3. That’s exactly what the Red Raiders did last year before Texas won its first national title in the decisive final game.
