SAN ANGELO, TX — The breakout star running back of the Ozona Lions is one of nine nominees for the DICK's Sporting Goods Male Athlete of the Year award.
Christian Villarreal, who has twice been named the Built Ford Tough Player of the Week, was a walking, talking highlight reel this past football season who kept everyone waiting each week to see how many yards he had.
For his senior year, Villarreal had 246 carries for 3,667 yards and 53 rushing touchdowns while chipping in 281 yards and two scores through the air. He averaged 333.4 yards a game with an insane 14.9 yards per carry.
While his season was cut short against a tough Anson team in the first round of the playoffs, that doesn’t diminish his incredible season.
Villarreal needs every vote he can get as he is up against eight other athletes, including Kaegan Ash from Mount Enterprise, who broke the single-season rushing record that was held by Kenneth Hall since 1953.
Ash had 4,562 yards in 15 games, setting a new record over Hall’s 4,045 yards. While the season yardage record was in question by both Ash and Villarreal, Ash also broke the career rushing record with 11,382 yards. He committed to play linebacker at Texas Tech.
