PHILADELPHIA, PA — Despite a breakout season in which he’s emerged as one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball, Chicago White Sox ace Davis Martin was snubbed Saturday when the All-Star Game rosters were announced.
Martin is tied for first in the American League with nine wins, and he’s tied for second in the AL with 10 quality starts. His 3.1 wins-above replacement metric is third-best in the AL.
His earned run average of 3.08 ranks ninth in the AL.
Martin has been the best pitcher for the White Sox and a big reason why they went from the league’s second-worst record to one game out of first place in the American League Central Division.
Despite all of that, he was surprisingly left off the AL’s roster.
Martin was widely expected to be rewarded with his first All-Star selection, but only one White Sox player will be represented — third baseman Miguel Vargas.
It’s still possible that a player opts out of the All-Star Game, which would open up a spot for Martin as a reserve. But for now, San Angelo has missed out on a chance to get to root for Martin when the game is played at 7 p.m. July 14 in Philadelphia.
Martin, who graduated from San Angelo Central in 2015, is one of only three Bobcats to play in the majors, along with David Hulse and Trey Lunsford.
