HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros traded one of the last remaining members of their 2017 World Series team Wednesday, dealing pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. to the Milwaukee Brewers.
McCullers, along with pitcher Colton Gordon, was traded for minor league outfielder Jadyn Fielder, the son of former Brewer Prince Fielder and the grandson of Cecil Fielder.
The Brewers will also pick up $2.5 million of McCullers’ remaining $6,727,273 salary this season.
McCullers has a place in Astros’ lore for his performances during the 2017 title team, including a memorable outing in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees when he threw 24 straight curveballs to close out the game.
He then started Game 7 of the World Series win against the Dodgers.
McCullers was an All-Star that season and finished seventh in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 2021. He helped the team win another World Series in 2022.
However, he’ll also be remembered for often being injured. He missed the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and he missed all of 2023 and 2024 as well, along with several other trips to the injured list.
He’s currently on a minor league rehab stint after another IL stint this year due to a rotator cuff impingement.
With McCullers’ departure, the Astros now have only two players remaining — Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa — from the 2017 title team. Correa rejoined the team last year after signing with Minnesota in 2022.
Fielder, 21, is an intriguing young prospect. He’s hitting .233 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and 10 stolen bases for Class-A Carolina. His father and grandfather each hit 319 HRs in their careers.
