Tony Romo Placed on Leave by CBS

NEW YORK, NY — Tony Romo has been placed on leave by CBS Sports following his arrest last week on suspicion of driving under the influence, the network announced Friday.

Romo received three citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office after a July 23 traffic stop. Authorities said he was observed driving through a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from vehicles entering from an on-ramp.

According to the sheriff's office, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody before being booked and released. Deputies also reported finding an open container of alcohol inside his black Jeep. Court records show Romo was later cited for refusing to submit to an intoxication test following his arrest.

“Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice,” the network said in a statement.

Romo, 46, has served as CBS' lead NFL game analyst since 2017 after a 13-year playing career with the Dallas Cowboys. During his career, he earned four Pro Bowl selections and remains the franchise's career leader with 248 touchdown passes. He also held the Cowboys' career passing yards record until Dak Prescott surpassed him last season.

With Romo on leave, J.J. Watt will serve as CBS' lead game analyst alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. Watt joined CBS in 2023 and became a game analyst last season.

Body camera footage released earlier this week showed Romo telling deputies he was driving from a golf course and was on his way to visit his grandparents when he was stopped. A deputy told Romo he suspected he was impaired because he had red, glassy eyes and an odor of an alcoholic beverage.

Romo is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21.
