SAN ANGELO, TX — Mitch McLemore, who coached at several area schools including Junction, died Saturday at the age of 60.
McLemore, who was born in Olney, grew up in Stamford and graduated from Archer City. He attended college at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.
He began his 33-year coaching career in the small town of Bryson, followed by stops at Munday, Archer City, Big Spring, Knox City and Stamford.
McLemore may be best known for serving as Stamford’s defensive coordinator when the Bulldogs won back-to-back state titles in 2012 and ‘13.
That success propelled him to his first head coaching job with Junction in 2014.
He later served as the head coach at Big Spring (2017-18), Petrolia (2019-20) and Haskell (2021-24).
McLemore was diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer in December 2021 but didn’t retire until March 2025.
He is survived by his wife, Kim, and their children, Marni and Ty.
