Reagan County Beats Miles in Double OT Thriller

MILES, TX — It came down to double overtime, but the Reagan County Owls managed to knock off the Miles Bulldogs in a back-and-forth thriller in Miles on Friday night, 45-43.

"What a game," Reagan County head coach Kyle Brown said after the double OT win. "It was a great game, a great atmosphere, a back-and-forth game where both teams were out there competing."

The Owls tied the game 43-43 on a Weston Beck touchdown in the second overtime. Up to that point, neither team managed to convert an extra point or two-point conversion in overtime. On the 2-point attempt, the Bulldogs expected another run, but Reagan County called the pass. Miles left the Owls' Dominic Johnson open in the corner of the end zone for the easy pass and catch. The Owls converted, and the celebration began.

"We stayed positive," Coach Brown continued. "We've got 13 seniors, and so I think their leadership showed tonight."

Reagan County needed every bit of that leadership in a game where the Owls committed several costly penalties and turnovers that let Miles press the advantage throughout. However, the Owls handled that adversity well and won in overtime.

As awesome as the win was for Reagan County, talk about an absolute gut punch for the Bulldogs, who played just as good a game in the loss. Miles put up 43 points in a game that the Bulldogs could not find the separation they needed to put the Owls away.

Miles took the lead early before Reagan County battled back to score the next two touchdowns. Down 13-7, Miles responded with another touchdown to take the lead. An interception by the Bulldogs' Tanner Bennett set up a field goal to give Miles a 17-13 lead headed to the half.

In the second half, the teams traded scores. Reagan County took the lead 19-17 before Miles' Liam Yancy found Kane Brock for a 25-yard touchdown that gave the Bulldogs back the advantage, 25-19.

The Owls would respond again near the end of the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 25-25. Each team would score another touchdown by the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, 31-31.

Each team would trade scores in the first two overtimes before Reagan County converted the final 2-point conversion to win the game 45-43.

Next up, Reagan County (2-1) returns home to host McCamey on Friday, Sept. 18. Miles (1-2) hits the road to play Eldorado the same Friday. Both matchups kick off at 7 p.m.
