Veribest, Coleman Listed Among Texas Football’s Most Surprising Starts

SAN ANGELO, TX — Dave Campbell’s Texas Football featured its most surprising 3-0 starts to this season, and two Concho Valley schools made the list.

Veribest and Coleman, which each won only two games last year, have both already surpassed that win total this fall.

Veribest has posted three straight runaway wins over Santa Anna (48-0), Paint Rock (57-0) and Bronte (60-14).

Though the Falcons struggled to a 2-8 record last year, they had a combined record of 14-6 the previous two seasons, so this wasn’t entirely unexpected.

Veribest should see its toughest game of the season so far when it hosts Blackwell on Friday.

As for Coleman, the Bluecats snuck past Grape Creek 16-12 in their season opener. They then had to find a new opponent in Week 2 after Big Spring Pathway canceled, and they defeated the Odessa High JV 54-6, followed by a 47-12 win over TLCA Abilene last week.

This week, Coleman will host Albany, the No. 10-ranked team in Class 2A Division II, so the Bluecats’ undefeated start will face a serious test.

After a three-year run from to 2021 to 2023 when Coleman had a combined record of 29-7, the Bluecats have had back-to-back losing seasons with records of 4-8 in 2024 and 2-8 last year, so this has been a welcome start for the program.
