MONMOUTH, OR — Ayden Arp threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns — plus the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime — as the Angelo State University football team rallied for a 29-28 upset over No. 17 Western Oregon on Saturday.
The Rams were looking for their first win of the season, and they earned it in dramatic fashion.
After falling behind early, ASU tied the game at 7-7 on its first possession of the second quarter, putting together an 11-play drive that culminated in a five-yard TD pass from Arp to Alex Wyatt.
ASU carried that momentum into the second half, scoring on the third play of the third quarter when Arp connected with Kegan Stelmazewski for a 31-yard TD pass for a 14-7 lead.
Western Oregon had the next two scores to take a 21-14 advantage into the fourth quarter before Arp found Alan Dobbins for a 6-yard TD pass.
Western Oregon had a chance to win the game, but a 30-yard field goal attempt missed on the last play of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
The Wolves scored first in OT, but the Rams responded with a 12-yard TD pass from Arp to Dobbins.
ASU then decided to go for the win, and Arp rolled to his right and found Trevor Winn in the back of the end zone to pull off the 29-29 win.
ASU improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while Western Oregon fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in LSC play.
The Rams return home for a two-game homestand beginning Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host Central Washington for Family Day at 6 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
