Sonora’s Segura Earns Statewide Awards After Historic Passing Performance

SONORA, TX — Sonora High School quarterback Aaron Segura has earned two statewide awards after his 634-yard passing performance last week.

Segura was named the Built Ford Tough Player of the Week in Class 2A, and he was honored as the Panini Quarterback of the Week in 2A.

Segura set Sonora’s single-game passing record by completing 38 of 49 passes for 634 yards and seven touchdowns in the Broncos’ 54-19 win over Colorado City.

Angel Diaz, Wyatt Killough and Jayden Welborn all had more than 115 receiving yards.

Segura is in his third year as the starting QB for Sonora.

“He is a huge weapon in our offense because he always gets us in the right play,” Sonora head coach Blake Weston said. “He has a lot of freedom this year and is able to check us to the right play. He is extremely smart on and off the football field. He is a leader for our football team, and he is like having another coach on the field, which is a huge plus to have out there.

“He knows the offense in and out and knows what we want and allows us to play at a really good tempo and makes the offense very explosive. A lot of the time, he knows the play that’s going to be called before it is given to him. Aaron throws a great ball, has great arm strength and is very accurate.”

Through five games, Segura has completed 71% of his passes while throwing for 1,907 yards and 20 TDs.

Segura also competes in basketball, tennis, band and UIL academics. He ranks in the top 10 of his class and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Segura and the Broncos are off to a 4-1 start this year with a 1-0 record in District 4-2A Division I. They’ll play Friday at Christoval.
