Volleyball Roundup: Christoval Wins Program’s First Playoff Trophy

CHRISTOVAL, TX — The Christoval Lady Cougars added to a breakthrough volleyball season Thursday with their first-ever playoff trophy.

Christoval cruised past Roscoe 25-10, 25-11, 25-18 to win the Class 2A Division II bidistrict match.

The Lady Cougars, who are ranked No. 19 in the state, improved to 29-8.

Christoval will play the winner of Munday and Archer City next week in the area round at a site and time to be determined.

Christoval was a four-win team just two years ago, but the Lady Cougars have made a giant jump since then, which included their first district title with an undefeated run through 5-2A.

TLCA San Angelo Wins Program’s Second Playoff Trophy

SAN ANGELO, TX — The TLCA Lady Eagles brought home the volleyball program’s second-ever playoff trophy back to San Angelo on Thursday with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 win over Bowie.

It’s the first playoff win for TLCA since 2018.

The Lady Eagles went into the playoffs with the momentum of a win over No. 24-ranked Jim Ned last week, and that carried over into a sweep in their first-round playoff match.

TLCA was close to a playoff win last year but came up just short in a five-set loss to Comfort.

The Lady Eagles improved to 22-12 with Thursday’s win and advance to play Boyd (23-14) in the area round next week at a site and time to be determined.

Central, Lake View Drop Playoff Openers

San Angelo’s other two teams in the UIL playoffs — Central and Lake View — were each swept in their opening-round matches Thursday.

Central lost 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 to El Paso Coronado, while Lake View lost 25-23, 25-8, 25-7 to Stephenville.

It was Lake View’s first appearance in the playoffs since 2022.

Wall Starts Postseason Strong

Wall, which is ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 3A, rolled past Wichita Falls City View 25-13, 25-16, 25-8.

The Lady Hawks improved to 31-4 and will play Tolar next week in the area round.

Wall reached the state semifinals last year for the first time in program history, and the Lady Hawks look like they have the potential to make a run at their first appearance in the state final.

Other Concho Valley Highlights

Ballinger won its first playoff trophy in 56 years with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-21 sweep of Colorado City on Thursday.

The Lady Cats revived their program in 2021 and broke through with their first playoff appearance this season since 1970.

Ballinger improved to 23-14. The Lady Cats will draw a difficult Olney team that is 31-10 in the area round.

Coleman won its playoff opener 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 over Hawley to improve to 13-17. The Lady Bluecats were the fourth-place team out of their district but proved to be a tough first-round draw.

Coleman moves on to play Nocona or Electra in the next round.

Junction also won its first-round match 25-21, 25-17, 29-27 over Sabinal. The Lady Eagles improved to 20-14 and will try to upset No. 1-ranked Freer (33-2) in the next round.

Sonora, Miles and Richland Springs all lost their playoff openers Thursday.

Three other area teams — Bronte, Sterling City and Paint Rock — will play this weekend — while No. 2 Water Valley and No. 6 Veribest had a first-round bye and will start their playoff runs next week.
