SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo Central running back Zey Johnson is on pace to break the Bobcats’ single-season rushing record this week against Odessa Permian.
Johnson had 21 carries for 182 yards and two touchdowns last week against Midland High to put him on the brink of the record.
The 5-foot-11, 220-pound junior now has 1,634 yards and 21 TDs, leaving him just just 68 yards shy of breaking Daven Manning’s record of 1,701 yards set in 2016.
Johnson already owns the single-game rushing record after he ran for 353 yards against Belton earlier this year.
Johnson has been remarkably durable this season with 235 carries — an average of 26.1 carries per game.
He is gaining an average of seven yards for every carry while rushing for 181.6 yards per game.
He has topped the 100-yard mark in seven of his team’s nine games. In the other two games, he had 96 yards against Midland Lee and 82 yards against Mansfield Lake Ridge.
Johnson and the Bobcats will travel to Ratliff Stadium in Odessa on Friday for the regular-season finale against undefeated Permian.
Central will then have at least one playoff game to add to Johnson’s rushing total.
Johnson has not announced any college offers yet, though he has received game day invites from UTSA and Oklahoma State.
