Bobcats Head Coach Speaks on Permian, Matchup with Midland High
SAN ANGELO, TX — After a tough, one-score loss on the road at the hands of the Permian Panthers last Friday, the Central Bobcats still seek their first district win against Midland High this weekend.
"It was a 2-6A slugfest," Coach Smith said on Monday.
Central controlled much of the first half, but a missed field goal kept the game tied 21-21 at halftime. In the 2nd half, Permian slowly pulled away, scoring touchdowns while the Bobcats kicked field goals. Permian won in the end, 35-27.
"We have to find a way to make a few more of those crucial plays when it matters."
Despite the loss, the Bobcats looked good on offense and defense for much of the contest. Sure there were a few big plays here and there given up by the defense, but Central shut down a very talented running back in Gavin Black all night.
On offense, the Bobcats had two turnovers. An interception on the first drive of the game that was returned for a touchdown ended up being the difference. Any missed opportunity in such a tight contest can spell a loss, and it happened to Central last Friday night.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats host Midland High on Friday, a must-win situation if they want to compete for a playoff spot. We are at the point in the season where any loss will hurt playoff seeding and a playoff spot in general. Coach Smith thinks the Bobcats have what it takes to win on Friday.
"We are going to see the game shortened on Friday," Coach Smith said. "They keep the ball on the ground and they run the clock. Heavy run game from these guys, so it limits your possessions."
The Bulldogs run a ground-and-pound triple-option offense. Midland will look to lull the defense to sleep before hitting a big shot deep to take control of the football game. If Central wants to win, they have to control the line of scrimmage and take an early lead to throw Midland of their game.
"When you get a lead on a team like this, which is so run-heavy, you make them do something they are not built to do," Coach Smith said of a triple-option attack. "We need to do a good job offensively to try and strain their offense. If we can put together some early scoring drive in the game and maybe get them thinking about throwing the ball—we will be in great shape."
Head Coach Mark Smith gave his thoughts on the Bobcats' performance against Mojo and gave us a look into what we should expect from Midland High at San Angelo Stadium on Friday. Watch his press conference held at San Angelo Stadium on Monday here.
Kickoff in Friday's matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
