Angelo State's Amangazhiyeva Named South Central Rookie of the Year

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State freshman Danaiya Amangazhiyeva was named the South Central Region Rookie of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Tuesday with the release of its 2026 Division II Women’s Regional Awards.

Amangazhiyeva, a native of Almaty, Kazakhstan, posted a 19-3 overall singles record during her freshman campaign. She went a perfect 7-0 at line two singles and added a 12-3 mark at line three, finishing third on the team in total wins.

In doubles play, Amangazhiyeva compiled a 16-9 overall record and teamed with Vasilissa Kupriianova to earn Lone Star Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors during Week Seven.

She also received All-Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention recognition in singles.

The ITA annually honors top coaches and student-athletes across each region for excellence both on the court and in their communities.

The Rambelles finished 2026 in the South Central Regional Tournament with a 4-1 loss to Midwestern State over the weekend. Despite the loss, Angelo State still had several accomplishments this season that will be hard to match in the future. The Belles finished with a program record, 22 wins, this season. To go along with that, Angelo State began the year 19-0 before dropping a match to UT Tyler in LSC play.

Coach Jason Potthoff held his end-of-season press conference at the Junell Center on Monday to talk about his ladies and the season as a whole. Watch that press conference above.
