Lake View Seeks 3-0 Start Against Rival Lubbock High

SAN ANGELO, TX — Fresh off the first shutout victory since 2021, the Lake View Chiefs head into what has become a solid rivalry over the past decade against the Lubbock High Westerners.

Head coach Hector Guevara gave his thoughts on last week's 62-0 victory over Snyder before previewing the matchup against Lubbock High at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Watch that press conference above.

"I thought we played well," Guevara said. "We scored on the first drive and then sustained drives throughout the ball game. Defensively, we played well. We took advantage of their mistakes on special teams. There are still some things we have to clean up, being the second game of the year, but overall, I'm proud of the kids, proud of their effort, and proud of their 'want to'."

Lake View heads into Week 3 with a 2-0 record in back-to-back seasons and with a great amount of confidence. The Chiefs absolutely dismantled Snyder at home last weekend in a game where the starters sat in the fourth quarter. 

Quarterback Chris Alvizo blew away the competition on Friday. Lake View's senior quarterback finished 26 of 34 passing, with 423 yards and six touchdowns through the air. He also added a rushing TD.

"We have great leadership; Alvizo does a great job," Guevara said. "He gets after it every day in practice. The kids get to see how he goes through the motions and leads. He never gets too far ahead of himself, and the team rallies behind him."

The passing game led the way for the Chiefs. Five different Lake View receivers finished with more than 60 yards.

The passing attack included eight passing touchdowns: Calvin Whitfield, who led the Chiefs' receivers with four catches for 118 yards and one touchdown; Chris Rodela, three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown; Aiden Rivera, who had six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown; and Gabriel Alvarez with 6 catches for 64 yards. JuJu Lacy and Xzavier Hinojos both added touchdown catches.

Finally, and maybe most impressive of the evening, was Andrew Young. He finished with five catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns, then came into the game as Lake View's quarterback in the fourth quarter and threw for two more. 

The Chiefs will need that same level of confidence and production against Lubbock High on Friday. The Westerners come off a 21-10 loss to Lubbock Coronado last week and enter Week 3 at 0-2. While not ideal for Lubbock High, the close game against Coronado proves that this team is fully capable of playing good football. 

The Chiefs' defense allows 9.5 points a game on average through two weeks and should continue that trend this weekend. In contrast to last season, when Lake View gave up 34 points a game, this defense has already improved significantly. One key factor is all the takeaways. Through two games, Lake View has forced 10 takeaways. That's 10 extra possessions for Alvizo and the Chiefs' offense. If that trend continues, Lake View should be hard to beat no matter who they play.

One positive note for the Chiefs is the absence of former Lubbock High running back Bo Davis, who transferred to Frenship Memorial this season and was ruled ineligible by the UIL. Davis was a large part of Lubbock High's success in the Lake View game last year. He rushed the ball 30 times for 356 yards and had a 41-yard touchdown catch in the 50-49 loss to the Chiefs.

However, Lake View's defense should not relax just because Davis no longer wears the black and gold. The Chiefs need to continue to win the line of scrimmage and tackle well.

One area where Guevara still wants to see improvement is on special teams. Snyder had a number of kick returns that made it through Lake View's kickoff team and deep into the Chiefs' territory.

"Those kick returns flip the field," Guevara said. "Overall, I was very pleased, but those areas we have to clean up."

If Lake View continues the Chiefs' current trend of improvement so far this season, expect another Lake View victory this weekend.

Kickoff against Lubbock High is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday in Lubbock.
