Angelo State's Coach Girsch Speaks on the Rams' First Win

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Rams took down No. 17 Western Oregon in overtime on the road last Saturday to secure the Rams' first win in 2026.

"It's great to win," head coach Jeff Girsch said at his press conference at the Junell Center on Monday morning. "It's great to get on the board. I've been saying that this is a good football team; we just haven't been playing up to what our standard has been."

Ayden Arp threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and connected on the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime as Angelo State rallied for a 29-28 upset.

ASU improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play. Western Oregon fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Western Oregon had an opportunity to win in regulation, but a 30-yard field-goal attempt missed on the final play, sending the game to overtime, tied 21-21.

The Wolves scored first in overtime to take a 28-21 lead.

ASU answered when Arp found Alan Dobbins for a 12-yard touchdown, pulling the Rams within one. Instead of kicking the extra point to extend the game, ASU went for the win. Arp rolled to his right and connected with Trevor Winn in the back of the end zone for the game-winning two-point conversion.

ASU will now begin a two-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 3, against No. 12 Central Washington. The Family Day matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.

The Rams look to build on the momentum from last weekend's road win, but need to keep improving on both sides of the ball each week.
