Give the Gift of Texas History

Commissioner George P. Bush is spreading the word that historic map reproductions from the Texas General Land Office make fantastic gifts for friends and family members who are proud of their Texas heritage and want to support the conservation of Texas history for future generations, said a press release Wednesday. There are more than 45,000 maps to choose from and are priced from $20 to $40.

"Since taking office, I have reminded people across the state that Texas is not just a place on a map. It's an idea in the hearts of our people based on a unique history that sets Texans apart," Bush stated. "Having said this, the State of Texas maintains many historic maps--thousands of maps in fact, many of which are housed in the Archives and Records of the General Land Office."

Maps are sold at http://www.savetexashistory.org and the vast selection includes every county, major city, and hundreds of maps of the entire state and Republic. To receive a delivery by Christmas Day, orders must be placed before 5 p.m. on Dec. 21. An order may also be placed over the phone by calling 1-800-998-4GLO (4456).

Deputy Director of Archives and Records, Mark Lambert, stated, "Purchasing a map reproduction, you are giving an affordable and thoughtful gift, with 100% of the money going towards archival preservation of original maps and documents housed in the General Land Office Archives. Historic maps posted on the Texas General Land Office website make quick, easy gifts for anyone who loves the Lone Star State and its colorful past."

According to the press release, the Save Texas History Program is a unique program that brings together private and public efforts to preserve the 36 million maps and documents at the Texas General Land Office. Each year the General Land Office spends approximately $100,000 on map and document conservation and these funds are raised through map and document duplication fees, donations and grants.

"A map reproduction from the Texas General Land Office isn't just a uniquely Texan gift, but also financially supports historic preservation of original documents, archives and maps," Commissioner Bush said. "Maps are a great gift for friends, family and folks [who] love Texas and its history."
