Hellas Breaks Ground on Multipurpose Sports Facility at Sul Ross State in Alpine

ALPINE - What does a big student demand bring for Big Bend?

Partnering with another community-minded Texas city, Hellas Construction recently broke ground on a $1.4 M Design/Build project at Sul Ross State University.  The Multipurpose Recreational Sports Facility will be completed and ready for use in Fall 2016, and will offer students a safe, sustainable, environmentally friendly playing field for years to come.

“The entire Sul Ross State University community is very excited about this project.  Bringing this artificial turf, lighted recreational sports facility to our campus will be a game changer for our students,” said Dr. Bill Kibler, President, Sul Ross State University.

The facility, located at Jackson Field, will consist of 107,000 sq. ft. of Matrix® Turf and will be fully lit for 24-7 access. The field will fit a multitude of unique needs for the Sul Ross State University students, and will be striped for seven-on-seven flag football, four-on-four flag football, kickball, soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee, and a specialized 90-yard football area where the varsity football team will be able to practice.

“Our students work hard and they play hard, so having state of the art outdoor recreation facilities is a priority for us,” said Dr. Kibler.

Sul Ross State University students place heavy importance on extra-curricular activities, fueling the need for a reliable turf field.  In October of 2015, the students voted in favor of increases in athletic and recreational sports fees in order to fund the cost of the new Multipurpose Recreational Sports Facility.

The minimal maintenance required for Matrix Turf, the professionalism of Hellas Construction, and the focus on community safety made Hellas the ideal company to design and build the outdoor facility for Sul Ross State University.

“Hellas brings industry leading experience and cutting edge expertise to this project.  They also bring an attitude of partnership with our university to assure that we deliver the best facility possible for our students,” said Dr. Kibler.
