Abilene Zoo to Relocate Rhino for New Expansion

ABILENE, TX— A rhino at the Abilene Zoo will be relocated due to the zoo's expansion.

The Abilene Zoo announced on Facebook that it will be relocating Uhuru as new construction is supposed to begin this month. In a Facebook post, the Abilene Zoo stated:

"Uhuru has made a significant impact on Abilene Zoo since his arrival in 2023. His gentle and friendly personality makes lifelong memories for everyone that meets him.

"As part of A Bold New Adventure’s expansion process, Uhuru will be relocated to allow for new construction on Jan. 25. To honor the incredible influence that he has on everyone, we will be hosting a going away party for Uhuru on Saturday, Jan. 24.

"While all staff and zoo guests will be saddened to see the end of Uhuru’s time at Abilene Zoo, we are also excited about the start of the next phase of the zoo’s expansion which will provide more space for the addition of new species as well as the return of familiar ones, like the black rhino.

The expansion will create more space for multiple rhinos and a breeding program, contributed to the conservation of this endangered species. We hope you will join us in wishing Uhuru well over these next two weeks."
