Three Brothers Die After Falling Through Ice on Private Pond in Texas

BONHAM, TX — Three young brothers drowned Monday after falling through ice on a private pond in Fannin County, authorities said. 

The boys, ages 6, 8 and 9, fell through the ice on the pond off Recreational Road #3, just outside Bonham, according to a joint statement from the Texas Game Wardens and local agencies. 

The 8- and 9-year-olds were pulled from the water by first-arriving responders and a neighbor. Medical care was administered immediately before they were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The 6-year-old did not resurface initially but was later recovered by Texas Game Wardens after an extensive search of the pond. All three were pronounced deceased. 

Out of respect for the family and their privacy, officials did not release the children's names. The incident occurred amid a winter storm that brought freezing conditions to North Texas. 

Multiple agencies responded, including the Fannin County Sheriff's Office, Bonham Fire Department, Bonham Police Department, Lamar County emergency responders, Fannin County Emergency Management, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Game Wardens.

"The Fannin County Sheriff's Office and Texas Game Wardens appreciate the quick response and assistance ... and members of the community that stepped up to assist in this difficult time," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all affected by this tragic incident."
