BROWNSVILLE, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott joined officials Wednesday for the groundbreaking of Saronic Technologies' Port Alpha manufacturing facility at the Port of Brownsville, a more than $3 billion shipyard project expected to create thousands of jobs.
According to the governor's office, the facility is expected to generate up to 10,000 jobs and have an estimated $264.5 billion economic impact on Texas, making it one of the largest economic development projects in state history.
“The seas of the world will be ruled by warships built in the great State of Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “For ten years, Texas has ranked number one in the United States for creating new jobs, and Port Alpha will build on that record to strengthen Texas’ workforce and shape the arc of national security.”
Abbott described Port Alpha as the most advanced shipyard in the world and highlighted the project's role in expanding defense manufacturing in Texas.
The shipyard will manufacture both autonomous and manned vessels and represents more than $3 billion in private capital investment. The project is intended to expand the country's domestically built commercial and defense fleet.
When it opens, Port Alpha is expected to add an initial 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity, which the governor's office said is more than double the current U.S. commercial shipbuilding capacity.
Saronic is working with the state of Texas, Cameron County and regional educational institutions to develop engineering pipelines, technical training programs and apprenticeship opportunities aimed at preparing Texans for careers at the facility and in related industries.
Abbott was joined at the groundbreaking by Vice President JD Vance; Saronic Technologies co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas; U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez Jr. and Nathaniel Moran; Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr.; and William Kimmitt, under secretary of commerce for international trade.
