CHRISTOVAL, TX — Abbey Lee, a former 2A state champion from Christoval High School and current Ottawa University powerlifter, has qualified to compete at the 2025 World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
The international event, now in its 12th year, will be held Aug. 24 through Sept. 5. The junior category includes athletes between the ages of 19 and 23 competing in squat, bench press, and deadlift events.
Lee, who now trains and competes at the collegiate level in Kansas, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the estimated $6,500 cost of travel, lodging, meals, equipment, competition fees, and transportation.
“I’ve been selected to compete in the World’s Championship Powerlifting competition in Costa Rica!” Lee wrote on the fundraising page. “Representing not just my university but also my small hometown of Christoval, Texas, on a global stage is both a dream come true and a massive opportunity.”
In 2021, Lee won the Texas 2A State Powerlifting Title while competing for Christoval High School, lifting a combined total of 1,000 pounds — 150 more than the second-place finisher.
“This upcoming World Championship will be my second time competing at the international level during my collegiate career,” she wrote. “And I’m training harder than ever to make it count.”
