SAN ANGELO, TX — Longtime San Angelo chef Jason Helfer had the opportunity this week to cook for the Duck Dynasty crew while they were visiting the area to hunt at the Rocking Chair Ranch.
Helfer, the owner of the Peasant Village and PV Deli, said the foreman of the ranch reached out to him to see if he’d be interested in spending three days at the ranch cooking for the crew.
“It was honestly one of the most enjoyable, humbling experiences in my career,” Helfer said. “These individuals were so nice and so polite and so humble. It absolutely blew my mind how respectful they were.
“But being the chef for them, I also respect their privacy, which is one of the big reasons I was there as well. It’s not the first time I’ve cooked for celebrities or musicians.”
Duck Dynasty is a reality TV series that portrayed the lives of the Robertson family, which makes products for duck hunters.
They were in the Concho Valley, however, to hunt for deer.
Helfer said he started cooking at 3:30 each morning and didn’t finish until 10:30 each night.
Helfer said he even taught Willie Robertson how to make a mushroom sauce after Robertson took a liking to it, calling it “gravy.”
Helfer’s restaurant, the Peasant Village, 23 S. Park St., celebrated its 30th anniversary in April.
He said business has slowed a little since the July 4 flooding, but PV Deli, 2561 Sunset Dr., is still “humming along beautifully.”
Helfer said for anyone interested in seeing what it’s like in the kitchen at Peasant Village, he streams live on Tik Tok at @chefjasonhelfer.
“It’s unedited and unscripted, and it is what it is,” Helfer said.
