QUEMADO, N.M. — A sprawling 504,000-acre New Mexico ranch—nearly the size of Rhode Island and one of the largest private landholdings in the U.S.—has been quietly sold by the family of late Texas homebuilding tycoon Donald Ray Horton.
Known as the Great Western Ranch, the 790-square-mile property was listed in early 2024 for $142 million but sold on July 30 for an undisclosed amount after the price was reduced to $115 million. The buyer has not been publicly identified.

The sale was first reported by Mansion Global. Jeff Buerger, a real estate partner with Hall and Hall, handled the listing. Dax Hayden of Hayden Outdoors Real Estate represented the buyer.
“This ranch is more than just land—it’s a living testament to generations of thoughtful management,” Buerger told Mansion Global, noting the property’s ecological, wildlife and historical importance.
Located near Quemado in western New Mexico, the ranch spans more than 504,000 acres—over 225,000 of which are deeded—and includes 134 pastures used for rotational grazing. It supports nearly 1,900 calf pairs and 900 cows. The property is also a commercial hunting destination, home to bull elk, mule deer, and antelope.

The property features eight residential homes, dozens of barns and livestock facilities, 86 mostly solar- or electric-powered wells, and hundreds of ponds and small lakes. It also contains Native American archaeological sites, including Anasazi petroglyphs and ruins.
The Horton family, which also owns ranches in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, began assembling the land in 2014. The first parcel, a 293,000-acre tract, was acquired that year. Donald Ray Horton died in 2024 at the age of 74. He founded D.R. Horton, the Texas-based homebuilding company, in 1978.
