AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety presented Trooper Joseph Sherman from Corsicana with the Purple Heart on Monday, recognizing his bravery and sacrifice after being seriously injured in the line of duty earlier this year.
The honor was awarded during the August meeting of the Public Safety Commission by Chairman Stephen P. Mach, Commissioners Nelda Luce Blair, Dan Hord, Larry Long, and Steven Stodghill, and DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin.
“It is a privilege to be able to honor Trooper Sherman’s bravery and selfless dedication to the people of Texas in this way,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “His courage and resilience are an inspiration to all of us, and he serves as a shining example for all the men and women of this department.”
On March 13, Sherman and Trooper Noah Thompson were providing traffic control for a disabled commercial vehicle along Interstate 45 in Corsicana. While standing in a grassy median, a Ford F-250 veered off the road, struck their patrol unit, and continued toward the troopers. Both were hit despite attempts to move out of the way.
Sherman sustained serious injuries, including a broken right tibia, and was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital for emergency surgery. He remains under medical care as he continues to recover.
The Purple Heart is awarded to commissioned officers who are seriously injured in the line of duty.
