Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for San Angelo Area

SAN ANGELO, TX – The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Tom Green County, including San Angelo, until 7 p.m. Sunday.

At 6:18 p.m., a storm was located near San Angelo State Park moving north-northwest at 20 mph, with wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and pea-sized hail possible. The storm is expected to impact northern San Angelo, O.C. Fisher Reservoir, San Angelo State Park, Carlsbad, and Grape Creek.

Officials warned the storm could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Residents in the warning area are advised to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building and avoid windows. The alert affects more than 109,000 people, 47 schools, and five hospitals across Tom Green County, according to the alert. 

The San Angelo Police Department urged drivers not to attempt travel through flooded roadways, as torrential rainfall may accompany the storm and lead to flash flooding.

The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT.
