San Angelo Teams Defend Courts on Day 1 of Nita Vannoy Memorial Tournament

SAN ANGELO, TX — From Class 6A schools to homeschool teams, it was a stellar day for San Angelo on Friday at the Nita Vannoy Memorial Volleyball Tournament.

While two-time defending champion Central swept through its opening-day matches, the big story was how well San Angelo’s smaller teams in the tournament fared.

Class 3A TLCA won all three of its matches, highlighted by an impressive upset of 4A Andrews, which has played for the tournament title the last two years.

By winning its pool, TLCA qualified to play in the Gold Division on Saturday against Central at 10 a.m. Saturday at Central’s Babe Didrikson Gym.

The Angelo Saints homeschool team won both of its matches — including a victory over Class 5A Plainview — to also earn a surprising ticket to the Gold Division, where they’ll face another 5A team in El Paso Jefferson at 11 a.m. at Central.

Lake View, which went winless last season, earned a pair of three-set wins Friday over Bronte and Sterling City.

The Maidens lost to Lubbock-Cooper in their final match of the day, but they qualified for the Silver Division and will face Forsan at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake View.

The Wall Lady Hawks also swept through their three matches — including a win over Water Valley (ranked No. 7 in Class 1A) — to punch their ticket to the Gold Division, where they’ll face Seminole at 9 a.m. at Central.

The championship match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Central.
