SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been arrested after using a gun to threaten someone, who then shot the man in self defense, according to police.
Derreck Stringfield, 39, was arrested by the San Angelo Police Department for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to court documents, on Aug. 8, 2025, around 11:15 p.m., San Angelo police responded to the 1000 block of North Monroe Street regarding a shooting victim. Upon the officer’s arrival, the victim was at a separate location in the 1100 block of North Jackson Street. A sergeant informed the investigator that the victim was shot on North Monroe Street then fled to the residence on North Jackson Street. The crime scene was approximately 500 feet away from where the defendant, Stringfield, was located.
Stringfield was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigator contacted a witness who lives with Stringfield who stated that around 7 p.m. that evening, Stringfield left the residence and returned around 10 p.m. in a distraught manner, crying, and stating he was assaulted.
Stringfield was observed to go into the kitchen area and another part of the house before leaving the residence again. The witness did not know where Stringfield went, and she remained in the living room. Within 10 minutes, Stringfield returned and burst into the residence claiming he had been shot by someone.
The investigator arrived at the shooting location on North Monroe Street and spoke with a man who said Stringfield and some friends were at The Pour House Pub, 115 Paint Rock Road. He said there was tension between Stringfield and another man, which led to everyone leaving the pub.
The witness said when they arrived at North Monroe Street, a verbal altercation between Stringfield and the man took place, which escalated into a physical fight. Maskill said Stringfield was visibly upset after the physical altercation was halted, leading Stringfield to make threats towards the man. Afterward, Stringfield reportedly walked towards his residence before returning shortly after to make more threats.
The witness stated he left the scene to go home, and that is when he received a phone call informing him that Stringfield had been shot.
The investigator then spoke with a detective that conducted a Mirandized interview with the victim. The victim stated that he helped break up the fight, and that Stringfield and the other man shook hands afterward. However, Stringfield then said, “I got something for you” and went inside the residence to grab his belongings while making derogatory statements to everyone.
The victim said he knows Stringfield carries a revolver often, but he did not believe Stringfield would return.
Within approximately 10 minutes, the victim said Stringfield returned while he and a woman were preparing to leave. The victim saw Stringfield on foot with the same revolver he knew him to carry.
The victim informed Stringfield that he had a firearm on his person, but Stringfield continued to walk in the victim’s direction. Stringfield stopped at the end of the driveway and shot into the air multiple times while holding a knife. Then he walked around the vehicle and struck it several times with the revolver, causing damage.
Stringfield then allegedly charged towards the victim, forcing the victim to draw his weapon and shoot Stringfield multiple times. After shooting Stringfield, he fled towards his residence and called for emergency services.
Police reviewed surveillance footage, which showed Stringfield return to the location after the fight. Yelling and a gunshot could be heard. There were then multiple gunshots, followed by Stringfield running within view of the camera and yelling the victim’s name and “help.”
Stringfield was interviewed and he said he did not recall most of the night. He did confirm being at the pub with others and receiving a ride to North Monroe Street. He also allegedly admitted to handling the revolver found in the driveway on a previous occasion and owning the knife that was recovered near the revolver.
Stringfield was arrested on Sept. 4, 2025, and is currently an inmate at Tom Green County Jail being held on $250,000 bond.
