No. 6 Angelo State Rolls Past Western New Mexico on Family Night

SAN ANGELO, TX — Eight different players scored touchdowns as No. 6 Angelo State flattened Western New Mexico 56-27 on Saturday night during Family Day at LeGrand Stadium.

The Rams (4-0, 2-0 LSC) extended their Lone Star Conference winning streak to 14 games with the win.

Hear from Head Coach Jeff Girsch after the game below:

While the final score might be deceiving, Western New Mexico actually led in this ballgame. The Mustangs struck first on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Down 7-0, Angelo State responded quickly as quarterback Kaeden Smith connected with Corey Sandolph for a 54-yard touchdown to even the score at 7-7.

Smith later gave the Rams their first lead with a 36-yard touchdown strike to Hunter Wallis. After the Mustangs tied the game again, Angelo State took control for good with a one-yard touchdown run by Jayden Jones and a 51-yard pick six by Shamareon McKinnon, pushing the lead to 28-14. The interception extended the Rams’ streak with at least one interception to 19 straight games.

Smith threw three of his five touchdown passes in the second half, hitting Donny Bishop for a 13-yard score to essentially put the game out of reach. Trevor Winn snagged his first career touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and Cameron Dischler added a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Dischler led all rushers with 74 yards on the ground. The Rams would score one more time as the game clock wound down, but at that point, backups for both teams were in the game.

Next week, Angelo State enters its bye week before returning home to host UT Permian Basin on Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
