Press Briefing at Noon About Armed Standoff at Retirement Apartments

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo police have surrounded the Oak Grove Senior Apartments on Oak Grove Boulevard and residents have been evacuated to safety (update 10:20 a.m.). SWAT appeared to be moving in as a gurney was spotted as SWAT team gathered near one of the buildings. (update 10:40 a.m.). The San Angelo Police Department will hold a press briefing at noon concerning the armed standoff (Updated 11:50 a.m.).

Officials at the scene confirmed someone has barricaded themselves in or near the property and is presumably armed. Police are armed with rifles, and our reporters were told their safety could not be guaranteed.

Police Chief Travis Griffith addressed the media at about 9:35 a.m. and said the San Angelo Police Department received a call at 8:08 a.m. Wednesday regarding a shooting victim. Along with the San Angelo Fire Department, they were able to treat the victim, who is now at a local hospital in an unknown condition. He added that the residents of Oak Grove were evacuated to safety.

Griffith said the shooting took place inside one of the buildings at the apartment complex.

"We do have the San Angelo SWAT team, and a hostage negotiations team has arrived on scene, along with the criminal investigations division. They're here to hopefully find a peaceful solution," Griffith said. "We ask for people of faith to be praying that we have a peaceful solution to this ordeal and that justice is ultimately the outcome."

Griffith said law enforcement has evacuated the area, and there is no threat to the public. Their focus now is trying to end the standoff.

"This process is a longer thing. It's not something we push unless we have to," Griffith said. "There's no threat outside this area. And with the amount of people here, I can confidently tell you it'll remain that way."

Nearby Lamar and Bonham Elementary schools are on lockdown, according to several parents who have contacted San Angelo LIVE!, though we have not confirmed this with school officials.

Oak Grove Senior Apartments is a 143-unit Section 8 housing project located just off Green Meadow Drive near the Southland area of San Angelo.
