SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 5-ranked Angelo State football team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday in a 28-14 setback against No. 9 UT Permian Basin.
The Rams also no longer control their own destiny in trying to repeat as Lone Star Conference champs.
UTPB jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter and led 21-7 at halftime after scoring with 22 seconds left in the first half.
The Rams pulled within 21-14 late in the third quarter, but they were never able to find the tying score.
The Falcons put the game away in the final minute when Kanon Gibson threw a 9-yard TD pass to TJ McKenzie with only 18 seconds remaining.
Gibson also had three rushing TDs. He was 27-of-41 passing for 293 yards with two interceptions and a TD.
ASU’s offense struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Braeden Fuller made his return after missing most of the last three games with a strained calf, but he was largely contained by UTPB.
Fuller was 13-of-25 passing for 183 yards and two TDs, and he had minus-5 rushing yards on eight carries.
Anthony Jones had three catches for 77 yards to lead ASU’s receiving corps, highlighted by a 32-yard TD grab.
ASU, which fell to 4-1, will try to bounce back next week at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Rams will also be hoping that UTPB slips up next week at home against No. 16 Central Washington.
