PORTALES, NM — The Angelo State Rambelles returned to the win column Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Stadium, extending their unbeaten streak against the Greyhounds to 10 years.
With the win, the Rambelles improved to 7-3-4 overall and 6-2-2 in Lone Star Conference play. Angelo State has not lost to Eastern New Mexico since 2014 and has not conceded a goal to the Greyhounds since 2016.
The Belles wasted no time applying pressure early, as Sanai Stewart forced the first save of the match in the fifth minute with a low strike stopped by ENMU goalkeeper Roise Joyce Willmott.
In the 20th minute, ASU earned a free kick that proved to be the difference. Christina Clark sent the ball into the box, where Emma Vick redirected the ball in front of the goal. The pass connected with Lexi Gonzales, who fired off a right-footed shot that ricocheted off the post before crossing the line for the go-ahead goal.
Angelo State nearly doubled its lead late in the first half when Jillian Greaves’ close-range attempt struck the crossbar before being corralled by Willmott.
The Rambelles continued to dominate possession in the second half, firing 12 shots but were unable to capitalize again. The Belles' first-half goal held up as the game-winner.
Up next, the Rambelles return home Saturday, Oct. 25, to face UT Permian Basin for Senior Day at the LeGrand Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
