Water Valley Runs Past Robert Lee in Top 5 Matchup

WATER VALLEY, TX — A matchup between two of the best six-man football teams in Texas turned into a showcase for the Water Valley Wildcats.

Water Valley backed up its No. 2 state ranking with an impressive 67-30 win over No. 5 Robert Lee on a rainy Friday night.

The meeting of the two undefeated district rivals had all the makings of a classic, but Water Valley jumped out to a 22-0 lead and never really looked back.

Water Valley quarterback Landon Lacy threw five touchdown passes, including four to Rett Dickison.

Lacy also had a 55-yard TD run and a key interception on Robert Lee’s opening drive of the second half.

It was one of three Robert Lee turnovers, none more costly than a fumble near the goal line in the first quarter after the Steers had fallen into a 14-0 hole.

After Water Valley recovered the fumble, the Wildcats drove 73 yards to take a 22-0 lead. The Wildcats led 38-16 at halftime, and took a 51-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

Water Valley's defense took control of the game early, stopping the Steers on their first three drives. Slowing down Robert Lee's all-state spread back, Brenner Sherwood, is no easy task, but the Wildcats managed to do it.

Sherwood threw three TD passes, but he was largely contained. A year earlier, Water Valley had a much-closer 62-50 win over Robert Lee.

It's possible the teams could meet again down the road in the playoffs.

Robert Lee was the first team that wasn't 45'd by Water Valley this year. The Steers were also the first team to score more than 20 points against the Wildcats. Water Valley had allowed only 34 points all season heading into the game.

Boston Wiese, the leader of Water Valley's defense, also had a notable game on offense Friday. He had two TD runs — including a tackle-breaking 31-yard romp — and he walked the tightrope on the sideline for a 55-yard TD catch.

Water Valley improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in District 8-1A Division I. The Wildcats will travel to play Irion County next week.

Robert Lee fell to 8-1 and 2-1. The Steers will host Veribest next week, needing a win to lock up the district’s second and final playoff spot.
