DENTON, TX — The Angelo State women’s soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to Texas Woman’s University on Tuesday evening, concluding the regular season and securing the fourth seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Rambelles finish the regular season with a 9-4-5 overall record and 8-3-3 in conference play, while Texas Woman’s clinched the No. 3 seed with the win.
The lone goal of the night came in the 18th minute when TWU’s Jaida Arizmendi capitalized on a penalty kick, placing the Pioneers ahead 1-0. Angelo State struggled to create early opportunities, not registering its first shot until the 34th minute when Whitni Newbill had an attempt blocked inside the box by a TWU defender.
Despite the early deficit, the Rambelles controlled much of the match’s tempo, outshooting the Pioneers 8-1 in the first half and 11-5 overall, including four shots on goal. TWU managed just two shots on target, both handled by ASU keeper Melyna Martinez, who anchored a defense that allowed few quality chances throughout the contest.
Angelo State nearly found the equalizer in the closing seconds, but TWU goalkeeper Faith Greaves turned away a last-second shot to preserve the clean sheet and secure the victory for the Pioneers.
With the result, the Rambelles now turn their attention to postseason play. The Lone Star Conference Tournament field will be officially announced later this week, with Angelo State locked in as the No. 4 seed and set to host or travel depending on final standings across the league.
