Top 5 Football Games to Watch in West Texas This Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are our top five high school football games to watch in the Concho Valley and West Texas in Week 11:

Andrews at San Angelo Lake View

It should be an awesome atmosphere at San Angelo Stadium on Friday as the Lake View Chiefs (7-2) host the Andrews Mustangs (4-5) for the District 3-4A Division I title. Both teams are 2-0 in district play after wins over Pecos and Big Spring. In each matchup, Lake View had the more impressive result — 42-14 over Pecos and 76-49 against Big Spring — while Andrews beat Pecos 33-23 and Big Spring 28-20. Based on those results and home-field advantage, Lake View should be the favorite in this one. However, Andrews has history on its side. The Mustangs have won 18 straight games against Lake View, and they’re the defending district champs. The Chiefs haven’t won a district title in 21 years. This is the year Lake View has long been waiting for, and the Chiefs will try and finish off the regular season with a historic win.

The pick: Lake View 42, Andrews 28

Frenship at San Angelo Central

Central (5-4 overall, 2-2 in District 2-6A) clinched its first playoff berth since 2022 with last week’s win over Odessa High. Now the Bobcats have a chance to earn third place in district with a win Thursday in their regular-season finale against Frenship. These two teams have played close in recent years, including Frenship’s 51-44 win over Central last year in the final seconds. It looks like a comparable matchup again this season. Frenship is averaging 39 points per game, while Central is scoring 35 points per contest. Defensively, Frenship is allowing 30 points per game, and Central is giving up an average of 33 points. A win here would position either team for a better first-round playoff draw.

The pick: Frenship 41, Central 38

Christoval at Ozona

The No. 6-ranked Ozona Lions (9-0 overall, 4-0 in District 3-2A Division I) have a chance to complete their first perfect regular season since 2002 when they host Christoval (4-5, 2-2) on Friday. Ozona is coming off its closest game of the season, a 46-40 win at Forsan last week. Christian Villarreal rushed for 411 yards and five TDs on 35 carries as he continued his pursuit of the state’s single-season rushing record of 4,045 yards. Villarreal now has 3,269 yards and 47 TDs, putting him within real striking distance of a record that has stood since 1953. Ozona will try to find the right balance of chasing the individual record while also accomplishing its team goals. The Lions are likely set for a first-round playoff matchup next week with Anson (6-3). Christoval is projected to finish with the fourth and final playoff spot in this district, which would bring a matchup with Cisco next week to open the postseason. Christoval upset Ozona 25-12 last year to steal the district’s No. 2 seed and send the Lions falling to the No. 3 seed. A repeat performance against the Ozona juggernaut doesn’t seem likely this time.

Brady at Clifton

The Brady Bulldogs (7-2 overall, 4-0 in District 5-3A Division II) face one last test on their way to the district title when they travel to play Clifton (7-2, 3-1). Despite a couple of huge victories the last two weeks — 17-15 over Early in four overtimes, and 20-14 over defending district champion Tolar — Brady still hasn’t locked up the No. 1 seed in district just yet. In fact, the Bulldogs could end up on the wrong end of a three-way tiebreaker and fall to the No. 3 seed with a loss to Clifton. Brady faces a long road trip of about 135 miles northeast to Clifton, but it will be worth it if the Bulldogs can return home with an undisputed district title and the No. 1 seed.

The pick: Brady 36, Clifton 24

Panther Creek at Rochelle

This is a true win-and-you’re-in game between Panther Creek (5-4 overall, 2-1 in District 15-1A Division II) and Rochelle (3-6, 2-1). Whichever team comes out on top will clinch the district’s second and final playoff spot. Both teams have scored big wins over district rivals Brookesmith and Lohn, and both lost big to district champion Richland Springs. Panther Creek had to forfeit in this matchup last year due to a lack of players, but the Panthers now have a chance to earn their first playoff trip since 2022.
