Grape Creek Eagles’ Historic Season Ended by Idalou

 

COLORADO CITY, TX — The best football season in Grape Creek history came to an end Friday with a 59-12 loss to Idalou in the second round of the Class 3A Division II playoffs.

It was the winningest season in the 28-year history of the Eagles’ program as Grape Creek finished with a record of 7-5.

Grape Creek also won its first-ever playoff trophy last week.

On Friday, the Eagles ran into a tradition-rich program in Idalou that has made numerous deep playoff runs.

Grape Creek running back Darrell West still managed 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. His TD runs covered 45 and 22 yards.

West ended his breakout season with 1,965 yards on the ground.

Anthony Saavedra added 15 carries for 56 yards on Friday.

Gabe Santillan again led the Eagles’ defense with 16 tackles. Ashton Ortiz had nine tackles, and Hayden Simpson had eight tackles and a tackle for loss.

Idalou (9-3) advances to play Canadian (11-1) next week in the regional semifinals.
