HOLLYWOOD — The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has been officially released online, and it confirms the return of a fan-favorite character.
Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel’s highly anticipated blockbuster film that is releasing next year. The directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — Joe and Anthony Russo — return, and so does Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.
The synopsis reads:
“Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the Multiverse.”
(SPOILERS AHEAD! Although, it is one of the most successful franchises in the world. If you're not caught up, continue reading.)
Not only is Evans back, but Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, and Robert Downey Jr. is back but not as Tony Stark/Iron Man. This time, he will play Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark sacrificed himself by taking the Infinity Stones off of Thanos, snapped his fingers, and won the climactic battle. In the process, Stark died due to the amount of energy produced by the Stones.
Steve Rogers used the time machine they created to take the Infinity Stones back to their respective timelines, but instead of returning, he stayed in the past and got his happy ending with Peggy Carter.
Thor continued his adventures and took on Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Since the culmination of the MCU, Marvel has had a difficult time getting things going again. Every Marvel movie up to Avengers: Endgame all fed into the final two films (Infinity War and Endgame), which was dubbed “The Multiverse Saga” and included Phases 4, 5 and 6 of Marvel’s plan.
Those movies include:
- Black Widow
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
- Eternals
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
- Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
- Thor: Love and Thunder
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
- Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
- The Marvels
- Deadpool & Wolverine
- Captain America: Brave New World
- Thunderbolts
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day
- Avengers: Doomsday
- Avenges: Secret War
At Comic-Con a few years back, Robert Downey Jr. surprised fans onstage wearing a Dr. Doom mask, meaning he had been cast as Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. While it might seem confusing, with all the multiple universes out there, Marvel can bring back Downey and cast him as a different character. However, he might still be just a variant of Stark, and the real Victor Von Doom could be out there somewhere.
While many fans are excited for the return of all these characters, some feel like it is simply a move to bring back all the fans Marvel lost over the past few years.
Avengers: Doomsday has a stacked cast like the other Avenger movies. The cast includes:
- Robert Downey Jr. – Victor Von Doom
- Chris Evans – Steve Rogers/Captain America
- Chris Hemsworth – Thor
- Anthony Mackie – Sam Wilson/Captain America/Falcon
- Sebastian Stan – Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider
- Vanessa Kirby – Sue Storm/Invisible Woman
- Letitia Wright – Shuri/Black Panther

- Lewis Pullman – Bob Reynolds/Sentry
- Danny Ramirez- Joaquin Torres/Falcon
- Joseph Quinn – Johnny Storm/Human Torch
- David Harbour – Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian
- Winston Duke – M’Baku
- Hannah John-Kamen – Ava Starr/Ghost
- Tom Hiddleston – Loki
- Patrick Stewart – Charles Xavier/Professor X
- Ian McKellen – Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
- Alan Cuming – Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler
- Rebecca Romijn – Raven Darkholme/Mystique
- James Marsden – Scott Summers/Cyclops
- Channign Tatum – Remy LeBeau/Gambit
- Pedro Pascal – Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic
This is the MCU so any number of other star characters like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Hawkeye, or Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter could return. Also, characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage or any other show character could potentially show up as well.
If looking at that list of names looks off, it’s because the Marvel bought Fox and the characters from X-Men are back with them.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
