At approximately 9 p.m., San Angelo Police were called out to a motor vehicle accident on the north side of the Houston Harte Expressway access road close to Suddenlink and Comfort Suites. At first, what appeared to be a typical crash in the city turned into a dangerous chase across the Houston Harte Expressway, said SAPD officials.
According to an officer at the scene, a female driver of a Hyundai Elantra exited the Expressway on the north side access road at a high rate of speed and struck the driver of a maroon Saturn Vue.
Immediately following the crash, the woman exited the vehicle, grabbed her small son, and fled south across the Houston Harte Expressway despite oncoming traffic. However, as she made it to the other side, police cut her off and caught her in front of Cavender’s.
The official said the woman fled because she had outstanding warrants. By fleeing and putting her child in danger, the woman will face much more than warrants, the officer stated.
He also confirmed that there were no injuries, but the boy, approximately 5 years old, had to watch as his mother got handcuffed by officers. The officials at the scene attempted to make the boy feel safe while they sought a family member who could retrieve the boy since his mother was headed for the Tom Green County Jail; and despite her situation, the mother continued to fight.
“Mom is being pretty uncooperative, but we’ll get it worked out,” the officer said.
The child was provided a warm blanket and hot chocolate as officials attempted to work things out. As for the woman, she will be charged with the outstanding warrants as well as leaving the scene of an accident.
