The demand for electricity in Texas is growing, and as of today, Governor Greg Abbott is calling on all Texans to use energy responsibly during peak hours, which is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
For the first time since 2011, Texas has set a monthly record in electricity usage, and as a result, the state’s electric grid will face continued stress thanks to seasonably hot weather conditions expected to continue. In addition, persistent weather and high demands have forced several electricity generation units out of service.
“I encourage all Texans to implement responsible energy practices,” Governor Abbott said. “In order to mitigate stress on our state’s electricity grid, Texans should take simple measures to save as much energy as possible.”
To ensure the system can continue serving current power needs, people in the Concho Valley and the state are advised to take the following steps to reduce energy demand.
- Turn off all unnecessary lights and electronic equipment.
- Close blinds and drapes for windows that get direct sun.
- Try not to use the dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers, or other appliances during the peak hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Avoid opening refrigerators or freezers unnecessarily.
- Use microwaves for cooking instead of an electric range or oven.
- Set your pool pump to run in the early morning or late evening.
