PECOS, TX – A family in Reeves County is now behind bars after the Reeves County Sheriff's Office discovered they had locked a six-year-old girl in a dog cage for years.
According to multiple reports, on Sep. 28, 2023, Arizona Rooney, 43, Jacob Cantrell, 23, and Brandy Rooney, 76, were all arrested for charges relating to torturing a young girl.
The three were arrested after the RCSO went to their RV for a welfare concern. Once inside, they discovered a 6-year-old who had been locked in a dog kennel. The kennel was zip-tied and covered in human feces.
The child was locked in the cage with a child's toilet. Along with the feces, decomposed food in a bowl with no water was found. The RV was not fully air-conditioned either. Instead, only the main bedroom where the three and the family's dog slept had running A/C. In the area where the cage was located, the deputies found that it was 94 degrees.
The child was rescued and taken by CPS. The 6-year-old is completely non-verbal. They believe that this is due to years of trauma and neglect. The child was not physically or sexually assaulted, but the RCSO believes that she was tortured by ways of neglect.
The three were charged with crimes including injury to a child, endangering and abandoning a child, and unlawful restraint. None of the three have posted bond and remain in the Reeves County Jail.

The slowest, most painful death for all of them. They have no right to exist on this planet.

PermalinkThe pastor of the First Baptist Church is an intellectual - or at least, he's highly educated and able to speak on the intellectual aspect of the Christian faith. I was fascinated when he spoke about Christianity being a religion of justice.
I attended a sermon a few years ago to hear what Christian leaders had to say, to better understand those around me and to examine myself and my own presuppositions. Whereas I come from a tradition where radical compassion is the ideal, he spoke of Christianity as being a religion where forgiving but firm values, the idea of absolute right and wrong, and the duality between good and evil all define the Christian path and a Christian's relationship to the ultimate, infinite creator of the universe.
Living in "Wild West" Texas, this sermon gave me a lot to think about.
If I'm not mistaken, (and I might be,) the verses in Deuteronomy and Romans that state "vengeance belongs to the Lord" in translation are referring to dealing with with either a national or personal enemy, not with the administration of justice within a community.

PermalinkI most definitely was not suggesting that justice should not be administered! The reply was to Big Daddy and any other vigilantes.
Romans 13:1 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
Without going through the processes set up by God, one would be taking matters into their own hands. In doing so, actions such as those described by Big Daddy would be considered murder. Murder is evil as it is breaking one of the commandments. Do not repay evil with evil.
If the proper processes are followed, who is it that ultimately exacts vengeance?
