KERRVILLE, TX - U.S. Rep. August Pfluger said Saturday his daughters were safely evacuated from Camp Mystic near Kerrville, where catastrophic flash flooding has left at least 32 people dead and dozens still missing.
“Camille, Vivian and I are now reunited with Caroline and Juliana who were evacuated from Camp Mystic,” Pfluger said in a statement on social media. “The last day has brought unimaginable grief to many families, and we mourn with them as well as holding out hope for survivors.”
Pfluger thanked first responders and agencies including the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the White House, DHS, FEMA, DPS and local officials for their swift response.
Floodwaters along the Guadalupe River reportedly rose 26 feet in less than an hour on Friday, sweeping through riverside cabins at the historic all-girls summer camp. State and federal officials confirmed at least 32 fatalities as of Saturday afternoon, including children, and said about 27 campers remain unaccounted for.
Camp Mystic, founded in 1926, hosted more than 750 campers when the flood hit. Rescue operations have involved helicopters, drones, game wardens and volunteers. Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for Kerr and surrounding counties, including Tom Green County.
Details about victims’ identities have not been released. Officials urge families seeking information to call a reunification hotline at 830-258-1111.
Pfluger concluded his message with “pray for miracles.”
