SAN ANGELO, TX— A man was arrested by the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday for hunting at night.
Garrett Ellis, 38, was arrested Jan. 20, 2026, on one count each of miscellaneous hunting at night and miscellaneous hunting with an artificial light. Ellis was arrested by the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office at 7:32 a.m. The issuing authority was out of Concho County.
Hunting at night in Texas can be legal, but only for specific non-game animals, along with predators on private land with landowner permission.
For illegal hunting, the penalty depends on the whether it is a first-time offense. Hunting at night in Texas can be a misdemeanor or a state jail felony.
Ellis was released at 1:02 p.m. the same day.

To clarify, hunting deer and other game animals is illegal, but hog and coyote hunting is legal as well as a few other critters..... coons, possum, etc.
