San Angelo Ranks Second in Texas Oil Completions for February

 

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo area recorded 100 new oil completions in February 2026, the second-highest in the state, amid statewide activity that saw the Railroad Commission of Texas issue 579 original drilling permits, according to data released March 3. 

The San Angelo district also recorded 36 permits to drill new oil and gas holes but no new gas completions. Statewide, the permits included 501 for new wells, 11 re-entries of plugged wellbores, 14 field transfers, 52 re-completions and one reclassification. 

By well type, the breakdown included 121 oil permits, 40 gas, 377 oil and gas, 21 injection and 20 others. Commission staff processed 841 oil completions, 296 gas completions and 140 injection completions during the month. 

The Midland area led in overall activity, with 252 new drilling permits, 286 new oil completions and 54 new gas completions. 

Other districts reported the following:

  • San Antonio area: 75 new drilling permits, eight new oil completions, 17 new gas completions.
  • Refugio area: 40 new drilling permits, 31 new oil completions, nine new gas completions.
  • Southeast Texas: 19 new drilling permits, nine new oil completions, four new gas completions.
  • Deep South Texas: 14 new drilling permits, three new oil completions, 11 new gas completions.
  • East Central Texas: zero new drilling permits, zero new oil completions, seven new gas completions.
  • East Texas: 28 new drilling permits, two new oil completions, 27 new gas completions.
  • West Central Texas: three new drilling permits, nine new oil completions, zero new gas completions.
  • Lubbock area: 14 new drilling permits, 11 new oil completions, zero new gas completions.
  • North Texas: 16 new drilling permits, 18 new oil completions, four new gas completions.
  • Panhandle: four new drilling permits, two new oil completions, two new gas completions.

Statewide totals for new categories were 501 drilling permits, 479 oil completions and 135 gas completions.

Hypothetically, student walk-outs could help to stop this. I won't provide reasons so that students can formulate their own through research, although these reasons might include countering the racism involved, helping the environment, or advancing gay rights.
