POSITION: UA Technician

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Substance Abuse Unit Supervisor
ENTRY SALARY: $40,366.00 - $41,847.00 annually

GRADE: 12

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Non-exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The UA Technician works under the guidance of the Substance Abuse Unit Supervisor. Under the direction of the Substance Abuse Unit Supervisor, the UA Technician obtains urine specimens for the purpose of testing samples for controlled substances.


THE CONCHO VALLEY CSCD IS A DRUG FREE WORK ENVIRONMENT. ALL PERSONS SELECTED FOR POSSIBLE EMPLOYMENT SHALL SUBMIT TO A DRUG SCREEN FOR CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT, FAILURE OF THE DRUG SCREENING WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF ANY AND ALL OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT.

CONCHO VALLEY COMMUNITY SUPERVISION AND CORRECTIONS DEPARTMENT

UA TECHNICIAN

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Obtain urine specimens from individuals for the purpose of testing samples for
controlled substances.
2. Maintain the required chain of custody of urine specimens using container seals and
completing the appropriate forms/logs.
3. Verify the donor’s identification.
4. Prepare specimen for transport or delivery by commercial mail.
5. Insure internal control of all specimens is maintained.
6. Prepare specimens for testing (open and close UA specimen cups-pipette sample, peel
& attach labels, type information in computer system).
7. Operate the urinalysis testing equipment. Operation includes equipment preparation,
calibration, cleaning, and maintenance according to the manufacturers’ schedule.
8. Record and forward test results to the appropriate Supervision Officer.
9. Dispose of specimens according to the policy and guidelines.
10. Ability to lift 40 pounds.
11. Enter test results into the department’s computer system.
12. File records, order supplies and inventory control.
13. Testify in court as required.
14. Complies with the TDCJ-CJAD Code of Ethics.
15. Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Have acquired a High School Diploma or GED, two years of college is preferred.
Maintain an effective working relationship with Community Supervision staff.
Cannot be currently on community supervision or parole or serving a sentence for a criminal
offense. Persons with past convictions or criminal justice supervision will be evaluated on a
case-by-case basis in accordance with standards established by the Community Justice
Assistance Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Have the ability to make sound judgments.
Understand and practice Universal Precautions for prevention of infectious diseases.
Have a working knowledge of Texas Probation Laws or the willingness and ability to learn.
Have the ability to utilize a personal computer and general office equipment.
Be able to work independently and efficiently.
Possess skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Be familiar with the chain of custody procedures as they relate to the collection of urine
specimens for analysis of controlled substance use.
Have an understanding of the effects of controlled substances to include the physical,
psychological, adverse, and duration of these effects.
Know the various categories of drugs and controlled substances including accepted methods of
testing for use.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations, departmental policy and
procedures, as well as techniques involved in the administration of UA’s.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory and professional relationships with fellow
employees, supervisory and administrative personnel, the general public, and other agencies and
departments with whom we work
Ability to project and maintain an image consistent with the aims, goals and philosophy of the
Concho Valley Community Supervision and Corrections Department
Ability to effectively and consistently communicate the mission and philosophy of the
department
Ability to make rational, justifiable decisions
Ability to take direction and critique from supervisory and administrative personnel
Ability to follow the philosophy, policies, procedures and directives of the Concho Valley
Community Supervision and Corrections Department

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License (if employee is coming to this position from another
state, this requirement must be met no later than thirty days following date of employment)
Must have a telephone number at which they can be reached

Must have access to an automobile in good repair that can be used while on duty
Must have appropriate and current automobile insurance
Must maintain appropriate dress and appearance as indicated in the Concho Valley Community
Supervision and Corrections Department policies.
