Biker Killed in Crash with Big Rig

DE LEON, TX — A biker on a Harley not wearing a helmet and a Freightliner towing a semi-trailer crashed earlier this week in Comanche County, resulting in the death of the biker.

This occurred on Farm to Market Road 1496, approximately 6 miles east of De Leon

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the crash happened at 7:20 p.m. on March 13 under clear weather and dry road conditions.

The crash involved a 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle and a 2000 Freightliner truck tractor towing a 2015 MAS semi-trailer.

The biker, identified as 56-year-old James Dean Roden of De Leon, Texas, was pronounced dead at Texas Health Hospital at 9:16 p.m. by Justice of the Peace David Martin.

Roden, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, crossed into the oncoming southbound lane, striking the left side of the towed trailer of the truck.

The driver of the truck, 32-year-old Francisco Javier Carrasco Ortega from Del Bosque, Mexico, was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Roden failed to maintain his lane, leading to the fatal collision.

The posted speed limit on FM 1496 is 60 miles per hour, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
