17 Injured in Texas School Bus Rollover on First Day of School

LEANDER, TX — Seventeen people, including students and a bus driver, were injured Wednesday afternoon when a Leander ISD school bus overturned on Nameless Road near Honeycomb Lane, according to officials.

The crash happened shortly after school ended, before any students had been dropped off. Texas Department of Public Safety officials said the bus was traveling south on a slight curve when it veered off the road and rolled onto its side. The cause remains under investigation.

Austin-Travis County EMS said 43 individuals were evaluated at the scene. Twelve were transported directly to hospitals, and additional students were taken for medical evaluation after being assessed at a reunification center. Two people suffered serious injuries but are in stable condition.

Students were transported to Dell Children’s Medical Center, Texas Children’s North, Dell Children’s North, and Cedar Park Regional Medical Center. Due to the rural crash location, some patients were airlifted by STAR Flight.

A reunification center was set up at Round Mountain Baptist Church, where families were reunited with students. Agencies responding included the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Leander Fire Department, Cedar Park Fire Department, Pflugerville Fire, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Texas DPS.

Leander ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing said the district is working closely with counseling services to support students, staff, and families. “Our hearts are with all those impacted by this tragedy,” Gearing said. “We want each of the students and their families to know that our prayers are with them, our thoughts are with them, and we will do everything that we can in our power to support them.”
