SAPD Clocks Speeder Driving 103 MPH on Loop 306 During Traffic Enforcement Operation

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The San Angelo Police Department’s Traffic Section conducted a LIDAR Traffic Enforcement operation in the 1600 block of E. Houston Harte from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Police issued a total of ninety-two (92) citations during the operation.

Below is a breakdown of all the citations made:

  • Fail to Change Lanes/Slow While Passing Emergency Vehicle: 4
  • Speeding: 62 (Highest speed 103 MPH)
  • Driving While License Invalid: 3
  • Other/Misc. Violations: 12
  • No Insurance: 8
  • No Seat Belt: 3
  • Warnings: 14

As a reminder, the Texas Transportation Code requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles with lights activated to change lanes or slowdown by 20 MPH below the speed limit.  Failing to take these actions endangers personnel who provide critical and life-saving services.

A Seatbelt Enforcement Zone sign was utilized during the operation pursuant to the Department’s Buckle Down & Stay Strapped in campaign, which is geared to remind all vehicle occupants that buckling down is their best bet to prevent serious injury or death in a crash.  Texas law requires all vehicle occupants to be secured by a seat belt or child safety seat.

No surprise there. I think everyone on the loop believes you're supposed to drive at least 80 mph and tailgate as close as possible and oh yeah, don't bother to use your turn signal when changing lanes or exiting the loop, I mean everyone else should know where you're going and what your are thinking, duh!

The loop is designed and made for those kind of speeds... The danger comes into play with some 70+ year old moron gets on it and drives in the left inside lane at 45 miles per hour with a death grip on the wheel and panicked because they are going that fast and oblivious to the dangers they pose for even driving..........

I think there should be a minimum of two patrol cars on permanent patrol of the Loop. I'm tired of setting my cruise control to the posted speed limit just to have some idiot run up on me at 90 mph and burn a hole in the back of my head with their angry eyes. There have been too many accidents on what is otherwise a good stretch of road because of these selfish dummies. Let's start writing tickets and they'll start to behave themselves.

Doctor the loop may be designed for that kind of speed but the speed limit is 65. I have had two near misses on the loop trying to get home after work and both times it was due to excessive speed and both times it was drivers leaving the base! The base personnel have NO regard for their fellow drivers and drive way too fast! They will not hesitate to ride your bumper either! Be vigilant out there!

Tim and Sheylan.... Sounds like both of you have problems with people tailgating you on the loop...... Reread my post...... Sounds like both of your problems can become completely eliminated by doing one of two things..... (1) Use Sherwood Way for your travels, or (2) move over from the left inside lane and into the right outside lane for the logical reason to let faster traveling traffic pass on your left as designed by law.

I drive 70 on the loop and if both lanes are blocked there is no where to go! The "left lane for passing only" is not a rule that is followed on the loop! Come drive down Christoval Rd. between 4 and 5 in the afternoon and merge onto the loop and you will see what I mean. I have had to speed up at times to keep from getting rear ended when I am in the right lane! I know what the laws are and they are NOT being followed! It's dangerous!

You are breaking the law. You are the problwm. Slow to 65, the speed limit.

Well, Dr. D1psh1t, sounds like you like to tell everyone what to do, where to drive, how fast to drive, when to surrender their driver's license etc., etc.

If I'm driving 65 on the loop, I AM faster traffic. If you are driving faster than that, you are breaking the law and I am under no obligation to move over so you can pass me and cause an accident down the road. You and the other reckless drivers on the loop are selfish to believe you have a right to endanger everyone else's lives just so you can drive fast. You criticize old folks for driving slow when all they're trying to do is be careful. I'll bet you don't surrender your license when you turn 70 like you expect everyone else to do.

DingBat, you are an idiot. They just said they were driving speed limit. Law is the law!

And Doctor - the number of accidents on the loop is an indicator that there may be excessive speed!

Your so full of it, I agree that there needs to be 2 officers that need to patrol that area all the time, I am not 70 and do not drive the 45mph, and have seen no one like that, but I too have almost gotten run over because of these nuts going too darn fast and not yielding when they should in fact last week instead of yielding the dummbie speed up, almost hit me, and boy if hed hit me, my son, brothers and husband would of hit him ....lol.... And if I had of not been watching what was going on, we would of had a bad crash, they need to slow it down on the loop, and the lop was not built for someone to go 85-100 on it safely.

Susan Smith...... With all due respect, may I suggest some proof reading, the use of a dictionary and practicing proper sentence structure and punctuation before making your next post ?

Why? That's seems to be your job.I am out of school, if folks do not like what I say and how I say it OH WELL......

Not my job and I never asked if you were in or out of school, just trying to help you look more literate when you write.......

Like I posted earlier Martin I drive in the right lane at 70 mph. From what I can tell, about 85% of the people driving on the Loop stay in the left lane. It's dangerous!
