Teen Charged With Murder in Odessa Fentanyl Death

ODESSA, TX – A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in connection to a 19-year-old man’s fentanyl-related death in May, Odessa police said Tuesday.

Kaden Welch, 17, is charged with first-degree felony murder. Police said Welch was already in custody on unrelated charges when the murder warrant was obtained.

On May 2, officers responded to the 1300 block of Sunset for a medical call and found a 19-year-old male unresponsive. He was transported to a hospital and later pronounced deceased on May 13, according to police.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the victim’s social media account and linked Welch to a possible drug transaction. Welch was interviewed on June 16, and investigators determined he had provided the victim with an M30 pill for an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

An autopsy report received July 28 showed the cause of death as toxic effects of fentanyl. Based on the findings, police obtained the murder warrant for Welch.
