SAN ANGELO – A 22-year-old man is accused of striking a woman with his vehicle during a confrontation in San Angelo, injuring her as her juvenile daughter sat inside the car. He was arrested days later and is now jailed on multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to a complaint filed in Tom Green County Justice Court, Matthew Sanders hit the woman with his vehicle on August 23 outside a residence on Clover Drive. Investigators said family members confronted Sanders after discovering he had picked up the woman’s daughter without permission.
Witnesses told police Sanders initially stopped but then accelerated toward the woman, knocking her to the ground. Officers documented injuries to her face and head, including a laceration and swelling. Another man reported Sanders ran over his foot while fleeing.
Surveillance video reviewed by police showed Sanders’ vehicle stop briefly before accelerating into the woman and leaving the scene at a high rate of speed, according to the affidavit.
The incident occurred on August 23, but Sanders was not booked into the Tom Green County Jail until August 27 at 10:15 p.m. In addition to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, he faces charges of abandoning or endangering a child with criminal negligence, evading arrest detention, and two misdemeanor warrants. His bond is set at $105,000.
